Dari ayah saya mendapatkan marga dan dari ibu saya mendapatkan rasa kecintaan terhadap suku Makassar. Rasisme bukan sekadar soal asal-usul. Agama pun menjadi salah satu unsur identitas yang sangat mempengaruhi perilaku orang terhadap sesama.
Saya sebenarnya tidak yakin, bahwa kami semua sekeluarga pada dasarnya mendapatkan hidayah untuk bisa ikut menjadi umat Katolik di lingkungan kami. Tetapi sepertinya itu adalah salah satu cara untuk bisa diterima dalam lingkungan tertentu. Menjadi half-blooded sebenarnya tidak mudah. Kami seperti tidak bisa diterima di area manapun. Keluarga ayah yang merupakan keturunan murni dari China menganggap kami seperti orang luar, apa lagi kami tidak mempunyai kekayaan yang bagi keluarga China merupakan suatu bekal untuk bisa bergabung dalam komunitas yang disebut keluarga. Sebagai orang Indonesia dalam hal ini Makassar, kami pun dianggap tidak dapat masuk karena sudah terkontaminasi dengan darah China. Situasi pelik.
Mungkin atas rasa kesendirian itu akhirnya ibu saya menyekolahkan kami di Sekolah Katolik. Sekolah yang sepertinya bisa menerima kami apa adanya tanpa ada penghalang ras. Agar bisa diterima. Tapi benarkah demikian?
Rasisme ini memang sangat dalam melekat di hati masing-masing orang, menurut saya. Walaupun seseorang menyatakan dirinya sebagai seorang humanis, sadar atau tidak dia kadang menampakkan identitas yang seakan membelah humanisme yang diyakininya itu.
Saya ingat ketika masih bersekolah di Taman Kanak-Kanak. Kejadian yang tidak akan saya lupakan selama otak ini masih dapat menyimpan dan mengingat kenangan yang terjadi. Ketika itu saya masuk kelas siang. Seperti biasa sebelum kelas dimulai kami pasti bermain-main dengan teman sekelas. Ada seorang teman yang kalau bicara suku kemungkinan orang Flores. Tepat di saat ibu guru itu memasuki kelas. Dia marah besar. Saya tidak paham, bermain memang beresiko tetapi ketika saya dan teman-teman sekelas harus diusir dan dipindahkan ke kelas lain karena dia tidak mau mengajar membuat saya bingung. Saya sepertinya sampai pipis di celana ketika masih merasakan rotannya memukul kepala saya. Tapi itu tidak sesakit saat saya mendengar kata-katanya, “Dasar orang China,” Oh my God, bahkan di tempat yang kami rasa akan menerima kami pun kami mendapatkan perlakuan seperti itu.
Kemudian saya menjadi mualaf, saya seperti diterima dengan saudara-saudara yang beragama Islam. Sebagai seorang yang terselamatkan dan menjadi bagian dari umat muslim. Sebenarnya bukan itu tujuan saya, walaupun itu menjadi kelebihan ketika saya bekerja atau bergaul. Tetapi saya ingin orang-orang menerima saya sebagai manusia, bukan dengan melihat bendera apapun yang ada pada saya saat ini. Apakah jika saya convert mereka akan bersikap yang sama? Wallahualam…
